Trust Fall and the Value of Risk:

The Trust Fall has lost much favor in recent years due to the high level of risk, occasional misuse, and frequent negative press it has received within AE/EE forums. During this workshop we will:
1. Explore the nature and value of physical and emotional risk as they pertain to facilitation
2. Consider one approach to the Trust Fall that has a proven record of inviting powerful insights and profound dialogue
3. Discuss appropriate applications for the Trust Fall and other high-risk activities

In the winter of 07 the Adventure Centre's largest and most expansive ropes course was destroyed in a wind storm. See pictures, examples of gear that went through the event, and take a tour of the site. Use this expensive tragedy on our site as a learning experience. Not for the faint of heart.

This interactive session will introduce you to new ways of using your imagination, creativity, and logic in devising solutions to complex problems. Integrated Play will help you build relationships with your cross-functional teams; enhance your interpersonal skills to motivate each stakeholder. Using three-dimensional thinking, you will construct metaphors out of LEGO® bricks describing real situations facing you, and leading you to discover options. Possible solutions can be implemented immediately without entrapment in theoretical roundabouts

Brighid O'Shaughnessy:
is the Founder and Executive Artistic Director of Erasing the Distance, a non-profit organization that sheds light on mental illness through theatre and has served over 15,000 people at high schools, colleges, faith groups, community organizations, hospitals and workplaces throughout Illinois since 2005. She has worked intensively with adults with mental illness for the last 10 years, first through her work at Thresholds, Illinois' oldest and largest psycho-social rehabilitation program, then through her own organization Cheryl's Dreaming Big which used personal coaching and intensive leadership training to help clients pursue fulfilling and empowered lives. She is also a mental health educator with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, teaching families and care givers about signs, symptoms, treatment options, medication and its impact on the brain and how to act with compassion, empathy, and self-care while loving someone with a mental illness. She has a M.A. from DePaul University and a B.A. from Santa Clara University.
Richard Szwaja:
Richard Szwaja is passionate about facilitating the interpersonal and intrapersonal process in which we all engage. For more than 20 years, 11 of them directly in the field of Experiential and Adventure Education, he has pursued, practiced and trained others on the art of facilitating beyond the activity. Personally, professionally and spiritual, Richard seeks to empower himself and others to excellence through the practice of authenticity and intentionality. He has facilitated numerous workshops at AEE and ACCT conferences, as well as with leaders in various educational, organizational and community settings.
Sue Cain:
Susan B. Cain, M.A., L.C.S.W., is Co-founder, and Partner at The Corporate Learning Institute and a founding partner of the Black River Center for Management Enhancement.
Susan is an expert in the field of corporate training and development. She is a valued consultant and coach to numerous Fortune 500 companies crossing all industry sectors worldwide
She has developed and led programs in the area of team building, leadership development, accelerated learning, communication skill building, change management and corporate strategic planning.
Her training programs have been delivered all over the world and in concert with The Center for Creative Leadership in Whirlpool Corporation's World Wide Leadership Academy, and Tellab's International Leadership Institute. With The Corporate Learning Institute, Susan works nationally and internationally. Some of her clients include Tellabs, Whirlpool Corporation, The Kellogg Company, C/D/H, Amway, OWP&P, Herman Miller, Meijer, Sear's and Allstate.
Susan received her Master's degree in Clinical Social Work & Administrative Management from the University of Chicago in 1986. Her Bachelor of Arts in Clinical Psychology was awarded to her in 1981 from Elmhurst College. Susan is currently working to complete her Doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership at Argosy University.
Susan is past Board of Director member for the Association of Experiential Education and past President of the South Haven United Way. She is a founding member of the Trainer's Alliance. Susan has presented numerous white papers on training topics throughout her career. She is also a current field instructor for the University of Chicago.
Bob Knerr: Bob Knerr and Lee Snooks founded the adventre centre with a title 20 grant, some hard work and a lot of luck.

Wallace Tatara
Wallace Tatara: Currently working on a Masters in Education from Ferris State University. BA, Michigan State University. Certified Michigan Teacher, Wilderness First Aid certification. Four years facilitation and training experience with The Adventure Centre. Wallace has extensive experience working with diverse populations of students through work with a teen run away shelter, administering the domestic and sexual assault prevention education program with the Kalamazoo YWCA, and substitute teaching in Kalamazoo Public and other school systems
Janine Loughrin
Janine Loughrin: Masters Degree in Social Work from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, B.A. in Social Work from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina. Certifications in Holistic Health from Western Michigan University and in Wilderness Therapy from W.E. A., Wilderness Education Association. She has been trained as a Wilderness First Responder, and a Youth Corrections Officer with the state of North Carolina. She has served as an adjunct faculty member of Western Michigan University in their Social Work department.
