DALT's Dialogue on Hip-Hop
DALT (Diversity Awareness and Leadership Training), a program of the Adventure Centre, hosted its first "Dialogue on Hip Hop" on July 18th and hopes to host many more throughout the Kalamazoo community.
Since 2003, the DALT program has been working with local high school youth to create safer, more accepting schools for everyone. Working together year-round to learn better communication skills, DALT students have been very successful at positively impact their world.
| DALT participating students had yet another opportunity to sharpen their dialogue skills, discuss important issues and hear great local music at the "Dialogue on Hip-Hop". Working in conjunction with PBS, students watched an amazing documentary. According to its promoters, "Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes takes an in-depth look at representations of manhood, sexism and homophobia in hip-hop culture." Director Byron Hurt takes a "loving critique" from the perspective of a "hip-hop head". Held at Fire, the event on July 18th was eye-opening for all involved. DALT students participating in several activities where they were asked to critically look at media images of women, men, violence and gays. While opinions were sometimes strong, DALT students were, once again, extraordinary at practicing their best listeningand dialogue skills. |

To end the night, we brainstormed lists of songs they would want to share with their young brothers/sisters/sons/daughters. This was following by a stellar performance by local artists, Verbal Hemlock and Conscious (both of Truth Tone Records) — two socially conscious members of the Kalamazoo hip-hop scene and graduates of KPS. Food was donated by Martini's pizza and popcorn by Rave Motion Pictures.

Participating DALT schools are Kalamazoo Central, Phoenix, Portage Central, Portage Northern and Comstock High Schools with 180 students currently involved. We are looking for more participants from these 5 schools for the 2007/2008 school year. If you would like DALT students to facilitate a hip-hop dialogue for your group of high school aged students, please contact Sarah Drumm (598-8870) or Leslie Poucher (599-1066). DALT students are also developing an anti-bullying workshop for 3-8 grade students. Stay tuned for more information on the "DALT Action Team". |
Since then, we hosted another successful Dialogue on Hip-Hop on August 4th at the Douglass Community Association. While the dialogue in July was open only to DALT participants, the August event was the first to invite members of the public. If you are interested in seeing some of the documentary we discussed, check YouTube or visit the official website at PBS Independent Lens. Stay posted for information on the next "DALT Dialogue on Hip-Hop".

April 21-27 is TV-Turnoff Week! Why Turn off the TV?
Television cuts into family time, harms our children's ability to read and succeed in school, and contributes to unhealthy lifestyles and obesity. Here are just a few of the facts:
- On average, children in the US will spend more time in front of the television (1,023 hours) than in school this year (900 hours).
- Forty percent of Americans frequently or always watch television during dinner.
- As US Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said at the Kick Off of TV-Turnoff Week 2001, "We are raising the most overweight generation of youngsters in American history... This week is about saving lives."
April 25th is the Day of Silence. Check out their website to see how you can support GLBTQ youth in your school.
